The story of SuperBowl 48 is one for the record books. Going into Sunday’s game, everyone expected the Denver Broncos to triumph over the Seattle Seahawks, so it was an unexpected turn of events when the Seahawks scored early in the game and took the lead. By halftime, the score was 22-0 in favor of the Seahawks! When Denver finally scored in the third quarter, it was too late to steal the title from the Seahawks who went on to win with a score of 43-8.
The crushing defeat of the Broncos was attributed the failure of the Broncos to come together. “They choked!”, ‘They’re only great during the regular season, not post-season” “They couldn’t complete their runs” were some of the commentary made about the Broncos but despite their loss, the Seahawks owned the night with a great defensive strategy.
I love a good underdog story. Sunday’s Superbowl game was the classic story of the underdogs triumphing over the crowd favorite. In the Biblical story of David and Goliath, no one expected David to triumph over the giant Philistine. However, like David’s slingshot, the Seahawks defense knocked out the mighty Goliath that was Peyton Manning and the Broncos. In 1 Samuel 17:47, David says, “All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.” Soon after saying these words, David swung his slingshot and hit Goliath in the forehead, killing him.
I heard someone say a couple of months ago, “God doesn’t care about football.” I couldn’t disagree more. God cares about every aspect of our lives and if football is a large part of that, like it is for the players, God cares about our wins and losses. He cares about taking us from “glory to glory” and seeing His name glorified through our lives. I have to believe that’s what happened on Sunday, that there were a bunch of Seattle Seahawk players who sought the Lord in prayer and practice. They prayed like it depended on God and played like it all depended on them, a powerful combination. Like David said later in Psalm 37:4-6, “Take delight in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun.”
The Seattle Seahawk’s SuperBowl win is a story of a team come alive to give hope, a little “sizzle and pop” to those who have been counted out by society.
